Hello, everyone! First, let me say thank you all so much for your support with this blog and it's corresponding website and now Facebook page. It's neat to hear people reference this as the place to get info about Quad City happenings! You make the time spent worthwhile!!

For those of you who regularly visit our website (FYIQuadCities.com), you will notice that we're undergoing some changes. My hope was to make all of our updates offline and then roll out the new site, but it's just not going to work out that way. So, you'll get to see new things added, some old things disappear, and eventually we'll have a great new site (SAME ADDRESS!) that will be all-inclusive. We are making this blog part of our site, making us truly your one-stop for family fun! We are no longer posting here. Now new posts are being updated at the site under the "Blog Posts" tab

It's almost time for FREE summer movies!!

Well, moms, brace yourselves....you are now down to your last days of peace and quiet throughout the day (welcome to my world!) Here's something fun (and FREE) that you can do with your kiddos for 8 weeks!

One excellent feature that our movie theaters offer during the summertime is a weekly FREE movie. These vary by theater, but all are in the mornings and all are completely FREE. They are first-come, first-served so don't wait until 5 minutes before starting time and figure you'll always get in. We have actually hit a couple of times where they were full (daycare groups love these!). Most of the time they'll play the movie in multiple theaters, so if you're meeting people there, have a plan in place (we've frequently missed our friends and run into them out in the parking lot afterwards) The concession stands are always open for drink/popcorn/snack sales, and since you are getting you and all your kiddos in for free, consider supporting them (believe me, we don't EVER do this except in the summer)

We've attended these for several summers and you can bet we'll hit a few this year as well. These are a great rainy or too-hot day activity, and a nice way to have a playdate with your kids' friends. Currently Nova 6 (Moline) doesn't have their information available, but here's this year's run down:

Rock Island's July Train Festival

This summer we're going to have an interesting festival hit our area. July 21-24th there will be displays and entertainment at Schweibert Park (things like ride-on trains for kids and adults, displays of equipment, model railroad layouts, railroad related vendors, etc.) and numerous train excursions using vintage railroad cars, and diesel locomotives. Special Camp for Kids with Diabetes

Being a young child with diabetes can really alter your life. Frequently the children don't want their friends to know because they don't want to be different. The parents are concerned about having other caregivers because of what could happen if the care isn't managed properly.

This summer there is a way to solve both of these problems, while still giving your child freedom. There's a camp being held in Boone, IA for two weeks this summer just for children who have diabetes. They can go away from home for a week and no one has to worry about whether or not they'll be okay. Best of all, they can go away from home and be like everybody else!

The camp is being held at the YMCA camp in Boone and will offer swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, rappelling, archery and more. The staff will be made up of experienced counselors and expert medical staff. Financial aid is available.

The first week is for children ages 6-12 and will be June 26-July 2, 2011. The second week is July 3-9, 2011 and is for ages 13-18.

Have an almost-Kindergarten aged girl?? Here's a fun summer activity for them!

The Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois offers a summer program for kindergarten aged girls or girls entering kindergarten in 2011. The Daisy Petal Power Program is a Girl Scout program by mail. A great opportunity for Kindergarteners and their parents to explore the world of Girl Scouts before meeting with a troop in the fall.

From May-August, kindergarteners will receive a themed packet in the mail with fun activities to introduce them to the Girl Scout Daisy program. Each girl will also be registered as a member of Girl Scouts and offered the opportunity to join a troop in the fall of 2011. We will finish the summer with a Daisy Garden Tea Party.

Program costs are $35 for non-registered girls and cover supplies for the program, Girl Scout membership for 2011-2012 and entrance into the Daisy Garden Tea Party. (Cost for a currently registered Girl Scout is $23)

As parents, we all want our kids to "get" money. Not so much HAVE it, but UNDERSTAND it. Our financial world gets more complex all the time, and we need to teach our kids about this early on. Junior Achievement offers free online lessons to help you teach your children about money management. These lessons are in PDF format, so you could print them, and cover a wide range of topics from learning to count change to the true costs of buying a car. Each lesson is set up by grade level (Elem, Middle School, HS)

The YMCA and Camp Abe Lincoln are offering two family camp weekends this summer--Memorial Day and Labor Day. For $42/participant you will get: all meals and activities such as archery, alpine tower, arena rides, canoeing, fishing, hiking, swimming, and more. You may either bring your own tent OR rent a cabin (which would be my choice, hands down!) There are 4 different cabin prices that range from $50-$150 for the WEEKEND. All have heat and some type of air-conditioning (either window units or central air depending on the cabin) and have between 14 and 28 beds available. All campers must bring their own sleeping linens.

Wish YOU could have a garden this summer??

If you've been wanting your own garden, but don't have the space or availability to plant one, there are community garden plots available. The cities of Davenport, Rock Island, and Bettendorf all have spots for rent that you can take on as "yours" for the summer.

In Bettendorf, space is available at the Scott County Extension office, 875 Tanglefoot Lane. There are 11 in-ground, 8 ft 1 in x 14 ft plots available and 8 4 ft square raised beds. All bed spaces are $10 each. To rent a plot, call Julia Blazevic at (563) 359-7577. There are some tools on-site available for gardeners to use, and water will be available on site.

Davenport hosts many sites. There are 9 beds at Goose Hollow, 9th and Ripley Streets and 7 at the Friendly House on Myrtle Street. These plots are $10 each with a $20 refundable deposit. For more information, or to rent a plot, call Julia Blazevic at (563) 359-7577. Also, the Davenport Parks and Rec Dept. has 36 plots to rent at 7th and Farnam streets. Plots will be tilled by May 1st. Water will be available on site. Plots are $35 for a 10 x 10 foot and $40 for a 4 x 16 foot. A $20 refundable deposit will be charged for all plots. The Davenport Community and Economic Development Department will work with individuals/groups interested in starting a community garden at any of the 170 empty city lots that are suitable. For those of you who were saddened by the loss of the Krispy Kreme donut in our area, Garfield Elementary School is your HERO! The first Friday of each month (that'll be on the 6th this month!) you can go to the Brady Street Stadium's (Davenport) parking lot beginning at 7:30 AM and pick up a dozen freshly-baked donuts for $6. There will be a drive-up lane available. Proceeds from the sales will be used to build a new rock wall at Garfield.

Guess today is deal Thursday! I ran across something else on the E-mealz site that was share worthy. It's all about how to use coupons in an easy, efficient way. Enjoy!

Second, I discovered web sites where I could order the EXACT coupons I wanted in multiples! No more clipping, yeah! (See web site links below)
All those jars of Jiffy peanut butter we consume at $2.83 a whack now are bought at .50 a jar! That’s five jars for the normal price of one! I simply order 10 coupons on line for .08 cents each. If you're looking for something fun to do this week or next during spring break, go visit the zoo! They opened on Monday, and though many animals are still on their winter vacation, there are several you can see (including a cute, all-white baby Colobus monkey) The train isn't running yet, but the carousel is operational. No food stands are open, so plan to bring your own picnic. The drink vending machines were going ($1-$1.50 each)

And so we say "goodbye" to another holiday and another month, and welcome in NOVEMBER! What a crazy-fast year, eh?!? I'm not huge into Christmas before Thanksgiving, but ready or not, it's almost time for the Festival of Trees to begin!

General admission for the Festival of Trees (can purchase tickets at the door) is $8/adults, $3/kids 2-10, and $6/seniors (60+). Group rates are available. Discounted tickets ($1 off normal rates) are on sale now through 11/17 at all QC Hy Vee Stores.

Welcome, fall! You're now officially here!! That means it's time for the apples & pumpkins to be picked.

At Stone's Apple Barn (East Moline, 309-496-2318) They're open 7 days a week. Also, beginning in September, you may pick your own apples when you go. There is a 20 lb minimum for pick-your-owns.

At Happy Hollow U-Pick (also East Moline, 309-496-1515), they offer a large variety of produce. For the current selection, simply call them and it'll be listed on their answering machine. Visit them at www.happyhollowupick.com

One I haven't tried, but have heard good things about is Shady Knoll Farms (East Moline 309-496-9636) Many preschool groups are frequenting this one.

A different type of activity for you... UPDATED

UPDATE:
We took our kiddos to this event today, and let me tell you--it was completely worthwhile! The chemistry club students did a terrific job of demonstrating cool scientific experiments using "science speak" while still engaging the kids. Even our 4 year old loved it! We loved that each experiment was short enough that the kids could see all of them. None took more than about 5 minutes in between demos--most were ready immediately following the previous demo. This was great for our littler ones' attention spans. Also, it was really nice to have them in an actual college science lab without them having to be quiet and not touch anything. The students were great with giving the kids enough directions to keep them safe, yet encouraging them to get close/involved enough to make it meaningful.

Some of the highlights included Dr. Cool's Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream (yummy samples at the end!!), the Mentos/Diet Coke fountain, the non-burning dollar, drawing with radishes, "growling" gummy bears, their souvenir golden pennies, and the ever popular (at least at my house!!) exploding 2 liter bottles using dry ice--we usually use baking soda and vinegar.

We got a little lost and ended up starting in the Fryxell Geology Museum, which my kids ALSO loved! If you've never been there, be sure to stop by some time with your kids. There are many geodes, animal fossils, and teeth/skulls on display. One of our favorite things was the fluorescent mineral area. It allows you to see the effects of 5 different UV lights on certain minerals that naturally fluoresce.

All in all, it was a lovely FREE day spent at Augustana. Thanks, Augie Chemistry Club--you did a GREAT job! We'll be anxiously awaiting next year!!

Demonstrations every half hour, Ongoing Exhibits and Hands-On Activities
FREE - no registration required, no minimum or maximum number of guests, no RSVP, open to the public
No Age Restrictions: Although many of the exhibits are focused toward Middle School through Adult, there are hands-on activities for kids ages 4-10 (approx).

Demonstrations will be held every half hour in different classrooms and labs. There will be ongoing exhibits to view on a drop-in basis. A kids’ room with hands-on activity stations geared for ages 4 to 10, is open the entire 3 hours.
A flyer is available at a front desk when you come in the main entrance doors(east, ground level entrance facing the quad). The flyer will give the time and location of the scheduled demos, including Dr. Freeze and Captain Kinetics. Other walk-in exhibits are available anytime for drop-in including: Elephant Toothpaste, Collapsing Cans, Growling Bears, Flash Powder& Flaming Pumpkins.
Caution: Some loud noises and bright flashes may startle young children.

Chick-Fil-A Fall Festival/FREE fall events

Do your kiddos LOVE Chick-Fil-A? Do you LOVE free dinners?? Then stop by their fall festival (53rd Street, Davenport) this weekend for some special events and, yes, FREE food (Thurs/Fri only)!! Friday from 5-7 PM, they're having a hay bale maze. Kids 2-12 will receive a FREE Chick-Fil-A 4 ct. nugget meal just for finding their way through the maze! On Saturday from 11-2 and 5-7, you can enjoy the maze, hayrack rides, hot chocolate, and bobbing for apples, as well as voting for your favorite decorated pumpkin.
Thursdays are Family Nights. On the 21st and the 28th, kids can get FREE 4 ct. nugget meals and do some special activities. For FREE food on the 21st, dress them in their P.J.'s and on the 28th, have them wear a costume.

If you're unfamiliar with Antiquities, they're sepia, hand-colored photos done in costume--not old west style, but things like overalls, no shirts, bare feet, lacy dresses for the girls, etc. Best of all, they bring all the props and all you have to do is show up. And the pictures turn out so darling!!

If you're looking for something different for you or for some cute, original Hanukkah or Christmas gifts, this would be good! The photographer is scheduled to be here October 15th and 16th (we'll add the 14th if there are enough sales). All photos will be taken in Bettendorf, and the photographer will bring back the printed photos in plenty of time for the holidays. (There will be additional portraits available for purchase at that time).

Fine Print: There's a limit of one $10 certificate per household (you can't do multiple sittings of the same child/children with different certificates, nor can you purchase 1 for each of your children). It's good for children 16 and under (if you'd like a family portrait, that can be done in addition to the $10 one, but your certificate will not apply to that picture) Once all certificates have been sold, we will have a web address where you can go in and select your own sitting time.

The first class is on Salsas & Pickling (9/7), the second is about Boiling Water Bath Canning & Jams and Jellies (9/14), and the final class is about Pressure Canning & Dehydrating/Freezing Foods (9/21). Rain Barrels, Composters, & Deals, OH MY!!

Just stumbled upon a GREAT deal this coming weekend that I wanted to be sure to share with all of you...

Saturday, 8/28 from 9-3 you can pick up backyard composters AND rain barrels with no pre-ordering! The Waste Commission of Scott County and Rock Island County Waste Management Agency have teamed up for a special one-day only truckload sale of these items. We're proud owners of a composter and of several rain barrels and we LOVE them both!! (In fact, I think we'll be picking up a second composter this weekend!) Both save us money, and are good for the environment to boot. Bring a vehicle large enough to tote them away, and your Visa, Mastercard or checkbook and you'll be set.

The compost bins are $40 for the bin only and $60 for a bin, compost turner, and a kitchen scrap pail. (Personally, I think the extra $20 is overkill--that's just my opinion) The rain barrels are $75. That seems like a LOT of money for a plastic barrel (also comes with lid, mosquito netting, downspout diverter, spigot, and two overflow attachments), but believe me, they really ARE worthwhile!! Our plan is to add one or two per year until we can actually store enough to water our entire yard and landscaping.

So I just found out something cool that I thought you all should know... The Iowa State Extension Office has something called the "Answer Line".

Maybe you have a question on parenting, what kinds of plastics are safe for the microwave, how to get a stain out of a shirt....whatever. Who do you call?? Well, if you dial 800-262-3804 you will get to speak to a real live professional consumer/family scientist (NOT a recording!!) and have them research the answer to your conundrum. They will find the answer for whatever your questions are, not just top answers to a few FAQ. How cool is THAT?!?

They say that about 70% of Answer Line's questions deal with nutrition, food preparation, food safety, and food preservation.

Answer line is in operation Monday-Friday from 9-12 and 1-4 PM (because even answerers need lunch breaks!). After hours, you can check their FAQ section online at www.extension.iastate.edu/answerline They will also answer emailed questions.

My new favorite place...

Well, fellow moms, I have stumbled upon my new favorite place and am surprised to report it's in....Rock Island!

Early in July, I'd read about a new park that was opening in the old Casino Rock Island space downtown. It looked kind of cool, but we hadn't made it there yet. This week we celebrated a birthday there (#3 turned 6!!) and then went back two days later just to play.

Our new favorite place is Schwiebert Park in Downtown Rock Island. Now, I worked downtown for a number of years, and it's not a place I've rushed to take my kids...until now. One of the first things that struck me about this park is how large and varied it is. It's a very long park (so if you have multiple little ones or those that are runners, BRING YOUR STROLLER!), but very well laid-out.

Nearest the parking lot (closer to the Arsenal bridge) is the bandshell area. This is the kind of place that you can imagine "real" concerts taking place. There's a great grassy area where you can just see blankets and people listening to music (or watching some sort of cool show). Next to that area are the restrooms. Not port-a-potties, actual bathrooms with auto-flush toilets, sinks and dryers (no soap, though).

Further in is my kids' favorite spot--the fountains! There are 10 different fountains that spray at different times/heights with benches and more grassy areas nearby, so you can watch your kiddos play. At the end of the fountain area is a very shallow (think, lower than your ankle) wading pool where the kids can splash and play.

Beyond that point is an elevated shelter with 4 or 6 picnic tables with, in my opinion, THE BEST view of the river! You can see beyond the Centennial and all the way to the Locks at the Arsenal Bridge. This shelter is available for rental--it would make a beautiful backdrop for wedding pictures, rehearsal dinners, even kid parties.

If you continue on, you'll hit the playground. There are several different types of equipment there--some easier for smaller children and some really challenging for older ones. My kids are partial to the tilted wheel and the spinning buckets. They like to see how long they can spin before they feel so dizzy and sick they can barely move (boys!!)

At the end of the park is a private lot, used primarily by Modern Woodmen during the week (evidently it's open on the weekends). Did I mention yet that this entire experience is 100% FREE ?!?!

Schwiebert Park is EXACTLY what our riverfronts need! These pictures don't do it justice, but they'll hopefully pique your interest enough that you'll check it out. This is the kind of place that truly showcases the beauty of the Mississippi River, as well as the cities that border it. WAY TO GO, ROCK ISLAND!! You nailed it!!

Although I don't much care for "Christmas in July", I'm all about bargains and ways to reduce the costs of Christmas! While shopping at Toys R Us the other day, my son found a brochure about one of their new programs to help ease the costs of Christmas time.

Opening a Christmas Savers Club at any Toys R Us/Babies R Us location will allow you to save money now AND get a 3% bonus (max. value $75) towards your shopping. They give you a card, receipt, and folder to keep it in. You make "deposits" at the registers to add value to your card. Humility of Mary Housing, Inc. helps single-parent families get back on their feet. In 20 years, they have helped over 1000 children and nearly 700 families! One of their funding sources is a giant garage sale held at the Fairgrounds (Davenport). This year's sale will be held 8/17-8/20 (see more info on my website's "Calendar View" page). In order to have a giant garage sale, they need LOTS of donations.

Here's a cool way to raise some money for Make-A-Wish.... This Sunday, 7/25, there will be a family movie night at Modern Woodmen Park (Davenport). Rain or shine the gates will open at 4:30, the movie starts at 6. There will be prizes, raffles, and fun for kids of all ages before the movie. Bring a blanket and enjoy a great movie, "Fantastic Mr. Fox", on the big screen. Tickets are $5/person or $15 for a family of 4 (I'm not sure how it works for those of us with more than 4 in our families!) at the gate. Hello, QC Moms (and others who are reading this)!--
It is my sincere hope that you are getting lots of good from this blog and the corresponding website. And now I need to ask something of each of you....
Since my kids were born, I have been an almost 100% stay-at-home mom. This has been a tremendous blessing for me (and hopefully my family!), but has kind of narrowed my resource horizon. In the Quad City area, we seem to have a shortage of groups and things designed for working (outside the home--because ALL moms work!!) moms.

Can any of you suggest resources that I could post to help non-full-time SAH moms? In our area there appears to be one (out of 10) MOPS groups that meets at night (Geneseo, if you're interested) and I know that MOMS Club has events at all times of the day. What else is out there?? MOPS and MOMS are both designed for ALL mothers-- working full-time, staying home full-time, or somewhere in between--but many moms with employers don't have the flexibility required to attend regular meetings.

Scare Up a Good Book, Rock Island Library's 2010 Summer Reading program, is in its final week, but with 16 programs scheduled in eight days, there's still plenty of free fun in store for children, teens and families. Activities and events include:

* Riverside Rumble with Reid Miller: 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 13 at Rock Island Southwest Branch, 9010 Ridgewood Road. River-themed stories, songs, poems and puppets from Wisconsin storyteller Reid Miller. Free.

* "Read Like a Rock Star" Tour with musician Thaddeus Rex and his dinosaur friend, Rock: 10 a.m., Thursday, July 15, Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street.
Picture a high-energy acoustic rock celebration of reading presented in a hip style with enough interactive silliness to keep kids roaring for more and you have Thaddeus Rex. The Chicago musician, also known as T-Rex, will bring his "Read Like a Rock Star" tour to some of our local libraries. The show is free and open to the public.

* Fax Gilbert Show: Mimes, Masks, Magic: 9:30 a.m., Monday, July 19, Rock Island Main Library. The 50-minute show includes mime, masks, magic illusions and a unique assortment of characters that create interactive stories for kids. Performance artist Fax Gilbert worked with the National Mime Theatre of Boston before moving to Fairfield, Iowa and establishing Fax Gilbert Programs. The program is free.

Ballots are available until July 16 in the Rock Island Public Library Children's Room at the Main Library, at the 30/31 Branch Library and the Southwest Branch Library. Members of the public can suggest a name in write-in voting or choose from a selection of names, such as:

HUG-A-Book is an annual early learning program for children ages two to five and their families. Each child gets a new, free book of their very own to hug and take home, courtesy of the Merrill Harris memorial fund of the Rock Island Public Library Foundation. Children and their families can come meet our costumed characters, hear a story or two, sing a song, make some crafts and get a free book. The event is free.

Something just for B'Tweens

If you have a child between the ages of 10 and 12, the Bettendorf Library has a fall program schedule JUST for them. It's called "B'Tweens" and is for children 10-12 only--no younger siblings, almost B'Tweens, or parents. The 2nd Tuesday of each month Aug-Dec (so far) from 4-5 PM, these kids can go to the BPL for an age-appropriate, all supplies provided, supervised activity. Here's the schedule so far....

AUGUST 10-Smoothie Sippin'--We'll all be making our own smoothies and the best concoction will win!

SEPTEMBER 14-Amazing Frames--Frame your family and friends with a really sweet creation. You'll be the artist, so get your creative juices going!

FREE Summer Movies! UPDATED 7/5

Well, it's nearly that time again....time to take your kids to the movies for FREE. Yes, that's right--that delightful 4 letter "F" word...FREE!! Now we've gotten the info on 2/3 of the theaters. The General Manager of the Rave Cinemas sent his info to me today--and it's GOOD news! Nova 6's website is a bit funky and not giving the info I'm seeking, so I've emailed them as well.

Rave Cinemas (Davenport--formerly Showcase 53) and Great Escape (Moline) are coming through for those of us who like to take our families to the movies, but don't like feeling like we've been robbed at gunpoint! Beginning June 8th, you can hit either the Great Escape or the Rave Cinema every Tuesday or Wednesday morning and take your kiddos to the movies for (here it comes....) FREE!! The show is the same Wednesday as Tuesday.

GREAT ESCAPE: Movies begin at 9:30 AM (doors usually open at 9:00), and when the theaters are full, they're full. (Note: we've always had great luck at this theater, but I do recall one movie, one time that we weren't able to attend. An aside, last year we went to see one that we'd already seen a few times, and for some reason it wasn't working so they showed us "Up"--a new release at the time--still for FREE!!) They've got their concession stands open, so you can actually buy some popcorn and a drink and still feel like you got one heck of a bargain! Oh-and if you're meeting people there, they've usually got the free films in TWO theaters, so specify right or left theater! (We've occasionally missed the people we went to see the movie with)

Over the weekend at the Bettendorf Public Works Fair, I found the following information, which sounds like a pretty cool activity for kiddos....

Quad City Enviro-Kids is a summer program for students entering 3rd-5th grade in the fall (younger children may enroll as long as a parent attends with them). In 2010, Enviro-Kids will meet six Saturdays throughout the summer from 9 a.m. – noon. Children can attend one or all of the Saturday programs and will learn about several aspects of the environment while having fun outdoors! Pre-registration is required. The cost is $5.00 per child, which covers all events and includes a t-shirt.

So, this friend of mine's mom (who is a REALLY amazing person/mother/grandmother) designed this SUPER DUPER program many years ago to keep your kids busy, on track, entertained, and growing during the summer months. It's called, simply enough, the Super Summer Challenge. "Wednesday, June 04, 2008 Take The Challenge!
This summer I'm implementing a plan I learned at a workshop at the Hearts at Home national moms' conference this year. It's called the "Super Summer Challenge" and the idea comes from Linda Wicks and what she learned from Sanity in the Summertime by Linda Dillow & Claudia Arp. Here's how it is working for our family:

Each child has a list of challenges related to things we would like to see them work on. For LMH it includes practicing flute for 20 minutes, moving up to the next swim level, celebrating someone else's success, journaling about her daily bible reading, making dessert and writing a letter. These and other challenges fall under one of four categories: Physical, Mental, Spiritual, and Caring/Sharing. Each challenge earns points (more for tougher, less for easier/favorite items).

My kids each need to earn a certain amount for us to take a weekly fun outing. And for every 20 points they earn they get a dollar. Then we have a long-term goal of a certain number of points for the summer after which we will take a big outing (American Girl Place, where we'll do something extra special like get photos done in the studio or eat lunch/tea in the Cafe).

The point is to get our kids trying new things and improving at old things. And the benefit is any time they need something to do they simply refer to the Challenge Chart. No more saying, "Mom, I'm Bored".

We've used this program with three of our four kiddos--this year we're in for all of them. It's neat to see it in action. You should consider it.

At our house everyone looks forward to the end of May/beginning of June because the libraries start their summer reading programs. My kids like to read, but they REALLY like to get prizes--so this is the perfect setup for them! If you've never tried these with your kids, this is the summer to start. Most, if not all, of the libraries tailor this program for all ages. Younger kids can be read to, beginning readers have a program, experienced readers have one, and most have teen and adult programs, too. Usually you are welcome to sign up for any (or all) of the reading programs--it doesn't have to be "your" library. Most of the local libraries use the same theme, "Make a Splash-READ!" is this year's, but they present and prize it in very different ways.

At our (Bettendorf) library each child will get to pick their own brand new book, and will usually get some other goodies once they finish their programs. Sometimes they'll even get halfway prizes (for reading half the required number of books)--this is always a HUGE sell! One year they received water bottles imprinted with the year's theme (dragons, princesses and knights) that we're still using. Not every library has released all the details of their summer programs, so I'll add to this as they do. Here's the info I have so far, in order of it's release.....

WATER CARNIVAL KICKS-OFF SUMMER READING PROGRAM
Davenport Public Library is making a splash this year by offering a fun-filled, action-packed water carnival as the kick-off to the Summer Reading Program, based on the 2010 theme, "Make a Splash - READ!" Come to the Fairmount Branch Library (3000 N. Fairmount Street) on Saturday, June 5, any time between 12 and 4 p.m. for an afternoon of adventure! The first stop will be signing up for the reading program. We'll have information about the program and the grand prizes on display, plus calendars of all our splashy events taking place this summer.

Once you've signed up, stay for the carnival! We'll have loads of games, including: Rubber Ducky Races, Feed the Shark Bean Bag Toss, Cuppa Cuppa Cuppa, Gone Fishin' Prize Pond, Hula Hoop Challenge, Water Balloon Toss, and Duck Pond. All of these fun games will earn kids tickets which they can use to purchase prizes from our prize booth. We'll even have a dunk tank where you can take a turn at dunking your favorite teachers and librarians!

If carnival games aren't your cup of tea, go crazy in the jumpy house or on the giant inflatable slide, provided by QC JumpZone! You can also get splashy with the Davenport Fire Department, and learn the basics of sailing with the Lake Davenport Sailing Club.

We'll also need your help getting the Library looking splash-tastic by decorating a fish with sparkles, glitter, tissue paper, cut-up magazines, and other embellishments. The decorated fish will proudly hang in the windows of our children's area all summer!

Hy-Vee will be on hand to serve you lunch. You can buy hot dogs, hamburgers, brats, and other summer treats hot off the grill! Then cool off with a smoothie, soda, bottle of water, or a nice iced-coffee from Cam's Coffee House. Food and beverage prices vary.

Scott County Library System Announces 2010 Summer Reading Program
The Scott County Library System is inviting all ages to "Make a Splash, READ!" this summer with its 2010 Summer Reading Program. The public is invited to visit one of the Scott County Library System branches

The Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency Parents As Teachers program is hosting an exciting seminar on Thursday, May 20th from 6:30-7:30 PM. It's called PBS-Positive Behavior Supports-and it "describes a process for addressing children's challenging behavior that is based on an understanding of the purpose of the behavior and a focus on teaching new skills to replace challenging behavior."

If you've never been to this (ESPECIALLY if you have little boys!!!), you should check it out. Usually (though it's not mentioned this year) you get to go for a free bus ride, too. Our guys, though now they're getting older, STILL look forward to this event. It'll take you all of an hour, including lunch, but is enjoyable.

"The City of Bettendorf Public Works Department, in conjunction with National Public Works Week and the Bettendorf Recycling Commission will be conducting its annual 'Public Works Day Open House and Recycling Fair' at the Bettendorf Maintenance Center on Saturday, May 22, from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. The Maintenance Center is located at 4403 Devils Glen Road in Bettendorf. This event is free and open to the public.

On display will be public works equipment including, among other things, garbage and recycling trucks, a snow plow, street flusher, street sweeper and loader. "Hands-on" backhoe operation will be demonstrated. Register to win free bus passes. See how a traffic camera operates and check out the "One-Man Patcher". Weekend Trek

Pre-kids, my hubby and I were travelers. We've both left the country more than once, I lived on, and traveled around a coast, and he's made many treks to Hawaii and seen a good chunk of the U.S. When our fourth child was born, our oldest was 5. It was right about that time that we (essentially) stopped traveling, other than day trips. (It occurred to us that we haven't even been to Iowa City in almost 6 years.) We were invited to a wedding in Des Moines this past weekend, and since our "baby" is almost 4, and none of us had ever really been to Des Moines, we decided to do something crazy and plan an overnight trip. Now, to all of you who travel near and far on a regular basis with small children in tow, my hat goes off to you. Though there aren't many things that put me off with a group of littles, traveling overnight/weekend was one of them. Traveling with mid to big kids is a WHOLE different ball game. It's (relatively) easy and was a LOT of fun! We're already planning the next trip. www.seedesmoines.com

If you haven't done the Des Moines area trip with your kids, you need to consider it! We had SO much fun, and barely scratched the surface of that area! It's a funny city. It has elements of so many other cities, yet definitely feels like IA.

Our first stop was the Capitol Building. They run tours 6 days a week (Saturdays 9:30 until 2:30) that are about an hour long. (Also allow self-guided tours) The tour guide was terrific. She was very knowledgeable and great about pointing out things that the kids would like, too.

She was very patient if it took us a tad longer to see something/catch up. At the end, the kids got a tour souvenir (pencils, coloring books, and tatoos) which were a huge hit. The end of the tour is a walk around the inside of the dome. This is over 100 feet in the air. In order to participate, you MUST be at least 6 (our 5 1/2 year old was not eligible--6 means 6) I bravely volunteered to skip that part and stay on the ground with the littler ones. Turns out, no one in our group was too keen on heading up there! Bet it was a cool view, though! Of course, no tourist stop is complete without a trip to the gift store! I was impressed because, although they don't have much in their store, most of it is very reasonable ($1-$3).

It was neat to see the different chambers and hear about what goes on in them. My kids were most fascinated with the chandeliers (go figure). I think I liked the library the best. Although, my hubby's shot of the banner (above right) is pretty cool, too. That banner, by the way, is suspended on wires, so it appears to be floating. The background was too plain, so they commissioned an artist to paint an Iowa June summer sky behind it.

On Sunday, we decided to hit the SCI Museum (Science Center of Iowa) before leaving Des Moines. This is a nice-looking, kind of plain building that houses FANTASTIC fun! It's free with a Bettendorf Family Museum membership. As we pulled up, my oldest was kind of cranky and asked if it was going to be boring. Two hours later we dragged him out of there. It's a well-laid out, VERY hands-on mix of the Putnam and the Family Museum--but cooler. Like the Putnam, each area has it's own theme. This woodsy pic is one from an area that has a mock cave to walk through, taxidermy samples of Iowa's animals, and glass cages around the room with real animals (most are snakes) found in Iowa. The pic on the right was one of my favorite things to do. It's a huge, wall-size ball maze. You put those colorful ball-pit balls in the funnels and they do all kinds of crazy things. In this room was a rocket launch area. My kiddos and their dad built paper rockets, then threaded them on these tubes and pressed the "launch" button to see them fly off. They've built this 40+ foot....like a giant batting cage so the rockets can zoom away and the kids can retrieve them. Another HUGE hit in this room was a table with Legos where the kids could make vehicles and then race them down a ramp. We didn't make it to the sky room, or to see any of the hourly shows and demonstrations. Next trip. The rest of our family went to Blank Park Zoo Sunday morning. From there, it was off to Pella to see the tulips. When we hit our hotel in Des Moines, we found out we were there one week before the huge Tulip Festival in Pella. So we decided to check them out. Pella is a cool little town. It reminded me of Galena with a Dutch feel. To note, the funky shops in Pella are almost all closed on Sunday. So if you want to see the town, it's a good time because it's not so touristy. However, if you want to shop, go Saturday. We had friends who stopped there Saturday and said it was so crowded you couldn't even park anywhere. NOT the case on Sunday. As I mentioned, the big Festival is next weekend. We were able to see lots of people practicing for their show. Above was a dance group working on their clogging. We also saw and heard the Duchesses (HS girls who sing) practicing. From the looks and sounds of things, the Tulip Festival will also have to be on our "next trip" list!

Our last thing to quickly check out was something my hubby ran across. Just a few miles from Pella (4 or 5, I think it was) is Iowa's largest lake--Red Rock Lake. My boys were pretty sure it was an ocean. There are cabins there that you can rent and do the lake thing. I'm 100% NOT a camper (I don't even like when the power's out for more than an hour or two), but I'd consider renting a cabin to stay there. This is a phenomenal looking place. My pictures do not do it justice. This is one of the side where people were boating (not the "ocean" side). We were racing the rain, so we didn't get to go explore that area. As we left dinner in Coralville, we got the final, most beautiful site. I mentioned the rain we'd raced... It mostly passed as we were eating. Then JUST as my hubby said that it was a perfect rainbow sky, we saw this....

a double rainbow with ALL the colors represented. Best of all, it was a full arc rainbow that stretched from one side of the highway to the other. A full-arch, double rainbow. What a great way to end a great trip!

So here's a sign of the times....the library's gone text crazy!! This came across my Homeschool network, and I thought it was definitely worth sharing.

"Need Info On the Go? Text a Librarian!

Responding to the popularity of text messaging, residents in the Quad Cities can now ask questions and get information from the Davenport Public Library by text message.

On average, Americans text message almost twice as much as they talk on mobile phones, according to a recent Nielsen Mobile Survey, making it a preferred means of communication while on-the-go.

"Recognizing the increased use of text messaging by customers of all ages, we felt it important to offer a way to communicate with the library via text messaging," said Rita Specht, Reference Supervisor. "The new service provides an easy-to-use interface for our librarians and maintains the privacy of our patrons' information."

For customers who are unable to ask a librarian in person or online, or those who simply prefer texting over talking, the Text a Librarian service provides a convenient option for getting info on their mobile phone from the helpful reference librarians at the Davenport Public Library.

With Text a Librarian, customers ask questions by sending text messages with their mobile phones and librarians answer on a web-based interface, keeping a "live archive" of all the questions and answers. The service does not display phone numbers and generates an anonymous ID for each customer in order to reference conversation history.

Using the service is easy. Compose a new text message to 66746, type in the keyword DPLKNOWS, and ask your question. Message and data rates may apply.

Text a Librarian was developed by Mosio, an award-winning mobile technology company that enables companies and institutions to harness the power of mobile communications.

"Mobility is a way of life for most people, making the way in which we stay connected a central issue for many libraries," said Noel Chandler, Mosio CEO. Davenport Library and River Bandits Team Up!!

Just found out about this and thought it'd be worth passing on....

"STEP UP TO THE PLATE & WIN A TRIP TO NEW YORK!

Two of America's favorite pastimes are baseball and libraries, and both have longstanding traditions. Like baseball, public libraries have been around more than a century, and have been providing entertainment and education to kids and adults who want more out of life. What could be better than a free baseball game and a visit to your public library? A partnership between the Davenport Public Library and the Quad Cities River Bandits does just that! Join us this summer for the "Step Up to the Plate" program, sponsored by the American Library Association and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

Everyone who participates locally will receive a free ticket to any regular season Quad Cities River Bandits game and will have their name entered into a drawing for a local grand prize package. Grand prize winners will receive four club seat tickets to Fan Appreciation Night, a first pitch opportunity, a behind the scenes tour of Modern Woodmen Park, and a special Quad Cities River Bandits gift bag. There will be one local grand prize drawn for each age group. In order to receive tickets to the River Bandits games and register for the local grand prize you must register at one of the Davenport Public Libraries. All completed entries will be sent to the national drawing, which will make them eligible to win a trip for two to the Baseball Hall of Fame Gala in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Players can pick up a copy of the "Step Up to the Plate" Playbook at either Davenport Public Library location beginning Saturday, April 10. Each Playbook poses a series of baseball-related trivia questions to test players' information literacy skills. People of all ages are encouraged to use the print and electronic resources available at their library to answer a series of questions designed for their age group (10 and under, 11-13, 14-17 and 18 and over) and inspired by the collections of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Questions are available in both English and Spanish. Players can enter by submitting the completed playbook to either library by Saturday, August 14, 2010.

Make sure you go to "Library Night at the Ballpark" on Saturday, April 24 to see "Libby the Library Dog" throw out the first pitch between the River Bandits and the Chiefs! If you show your library card when you purchase tickets for this game you will receive $2 off each ticket.

Time to start thinking about GARDENING!

I ran across this in the paper today and thought it was pretty cool...

"Whether you're planting your first vegetable garden or have been gardening for many years, you'll get fresh ideas and guidance in a series of free garden classes offered by the University of Illinois/Rock Island County Extension. The Homegrown Challenge Purposeful Gardening Series will cover two topics per week, the first at 5:30 PM and the second at 6:45 PM each Wednesday, April through August, at the Extension office, 321 W. 2nd Avenue, Milan. The classes are free, but pre-registration is appreciated by going to www.extension.uiuc.edu/rockisland. For more information, call 309-756-9978."

From the list of classes, it looks like the first class is about general gardening tips and the the second class is about one or two specific veggies. What a neat idea!

A Better Way to Water...

In the midst of the spring rainy season it's hard to recall our (normally) drought days of July, but if summer 2010 is like most, they'll be here before we know it! Last year our household did something cool that was super helpful (even though it was more wet than drought-y last summer!)

For $75, River Action Inc. (East River Drive, Davenport, phone 563-322-2969) sells rain barrels--recycled, 60-gallon food-grade plastic barrels (think GIANT pickle barrels) that are equipped with a down-spout diverter, overflow valve, mosquito netting, and a spigot.

We got two of these last spring, and MAN, did we love them! When it rained, the rainwater collected in our barrels and then we'd do a bucket brigade to water our plants and grass as it dried out. We have a SUPER wet draining area, so my hubby connected the two barrels to give us 120 gallons of water storage. We were a little iffy about the cost, but we're seriously thinking a couple more might be inline for this year. I think saving money on our watering bill (we have a large amount of water-hog plants) AND reducing the runoff was really worthwhile.

Are you feeling the urge to clean out all your closets? To cull through all your kids' toys and clothes? Although most people automatically think "Take stuff to Goodwill", here are some other organizations that could also really benefit from stuff you'd like to move on....

      Humility of Mary Housing, Davenport (Phone 563-326-1330)--household decorations, towels (bath, hand, and washcloths), single beds and bedding, small appliances, kitchen items (pots and pans, silverware, etc.), furniture, dressers, children's summer clothing, diapers (especially sizes 3-5), ladies' dress clothes, health and beauty supplies (shampoo, soap, deodorant, feminine products, toothpaste, disposable razors, etc), food items (canned meats, cereal, kid snacks, frozen meats, boxed dinners), and household supplies (toilet paper, paper towels, kleenex, detergent, cleaning supplies, etc.)

   Bettendorf's Food Pantry, Grant Street, Bett (Phone 563-344-4126)--always needs canned goods, dry food goods, baby formula, etc.

     Sacred Heart's Clothing Center, Davenport (Phone 563-324-3257)--accepts clothing in all sizes that they give away to neighborhood and other residents for FREE. They accept donations on Mon, Wed, Fri, and Sat. Tues and Thurs are distribution days. This is a GREAT use of clothes you're no longer using!       Moxie Shop, Rock Island (Phone 309-788-3479 Ext.12) a program of the YWCA, Rock Island. Accepts gently used formal, business and business casual attire. Operates an upscale, resale boutique in downtown R.I. designed for women who are entering or re-entering the workforce to seek gainful employment.

     Lydia House, Davenport (Phone 563-322-0382); Crisis Pregnancy Center, Davenport (Phone 563-386-3787) and Moline (Phone 309-797-3636); Birthright (Phone 563-324-5261) all usually need new (bottles, pacifiers, diapers, wipes) and gently used baby items--blankets, onesies, socks, layette items.   www.lydiahome.org, www.cpcqc.org

     Salvation Army, Davenport (Phone 563-323-2748) will come to your house and pick up ANY items, large or small, and haul them away to their donation centers/stores.

     Read to Succeed, drop box at Family Museum, Bettendorf. A program that collects gently used books for children in need & redistributes them to shelters, etc.

     Quad City Arts, Rock Island (Phone 309-793-1213) collects gently used stuffed animals for the Festival of Trees Zoo Tree. After the Festival, the tree is dismantled and the animals are given to local children in need (shelters, hospitals, etc.) www.quadcityarts.com

"Just a Mom" Story

This was sent to me in an email and I thought it was worth sharing...

JUST A MOM?

A woman, renewing her driver's license at the County Clerk 's office, was asked by the woman recorder to state her occupation.

She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself.

"What I mean is, " explained the recorder,
"do you have a job or are you just a ......?"

"Of course I have a job," snapped the woman.

"I'm a Mom."

"We don't list 'Mom' as an occupation,
'Housewife' covers it,” Said the recorder emphatically.

I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself
In the same situation, this time at our own Town Hall.
The Clerk was obviously a career woman, poised,
Efficient, and possessed of a high sounding title like,
"Official Interrogator" or "Town Registrar."

"What is your occupation?" she probed.

What made me say it? I do not know..
The words simply popped out.
"I'm a Research Associate in the field of
Child Development and Human Relations."

The clerk paused, ball-point pen frozen in midair and
Looked up as though she had not heard right.

I repeated the title slowly emphasizing the most
Significant words.
Then I stared with wonder as my pronouncement
Was written, in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire.

"Might I ask," said the clerk with new interest,
"just what you do in your field?"

Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice,
I heard myself reply,
"I have a continuing program of research,
(what mother doesn't)
In the laboratory and in the field,
(normally I would have said indoors and out)..
I'm working for my Masters, (first the Lord and then the whole family)
And already have four credits (all daughters).
Of course, the job is one of the most demanding
In the humanities, (any mother care to disagree?)
And I often work 14 hours a day, (24 is more like it).
But the job is more challenging than most
Run-of-the-mill careers and the rewards are more
About the satisfaction rather than just money."

There was an increasing note of respect in the
Clerk's' voice as she completed the form, stood up,
And personally ushered me to the door.

As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up by my
Glamorous new career, I was greeted by my
Lab assistants -- ages 13, 7, and 3.
Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model,
(a 6 month old baby) in the child development program,
Testing out a new vocal pattern.

I felt I had scored a beat on bureaucracy!
And I had gone on the official records as someone
More distinguished and indispensable
To mankind than "just another Mom."
Motherhood!

What a glorious career!
Especially when there's a title on the door..
